Circular 8/2004: Retention of civil servants beyond the normal retiring age

A Dhuine Uasail,

1. I am directed by the Minister for Finance to refer to paragraph 1 of Circular 8/2003 regarding the maximum income limits allowable where the retention of a civil servant beyond the normal retiring age on grounds of hardship is sought. 

The maximum income limits allowable have been reviewed and the following rates are applicable with effect from 2 January 2004:

€154.00 per week (€8,035.72 per year) for an officer

€101.80 per week (€5311.92 per year) for a spouse

€17.00 per week (€887.06 per year) for each dependent (i.e. a person resident with and wholly dependent on the officer).

The maximum income limits specified at paragraph 1 of Circular 8/2003 are superseded accordingly.

2. The provisions of paragraph 2 and 3 of Confidential Circular 5/91 still apply.

3. A return should be furnished to the Careers and Appointments Section at above address or by e-mail to Eileen.Buckley@finance.gov.ie no later than one week after the end of each quarter, giving the name, grade, date of birth and date of appointment to the Civil Service of each person retained on grounds of hardship under delegated sanction.
