Circular 6/2005: Restatement of Mileage Rates in Kilometres

1. I am directed by the Minister for Finance to refer to this Department’s Circular 33/2003 which set out the motor mileage rates for the civil service effective from 1 January 2003.

2. Distance signs on most national roads are now measured in kilometres. The Department understands that the remaining “mile post” signs on local and regional roads are to be converted to kilometres by the end of 2005. Furthermore, as you are aware, the measurement of speed on Irish roads has, with effect from 20 January 2005, been changed from miles per hour to kilometres per hour. In this context the Department has decided, following consultation with Staff Associations, to issue the attached restatement in mile and kilometre format of the tables appended to Circular 33/2003. In future these rates will be referred to as motor travel rates.

3. The kilometre version of the rates shown in this Circular reflects a conversion of current mileage rates at the ratio of 1:1.609 as provided for in The European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001 (S.I. No. 283 of 2001). This Circular does not involve any amendment of the rates provided for in Circular 33/2003.
